Heritage
In this section you will find information on the heritage of Kraainem, buildings/landscape and movable objects. Movable or cultural heritage concerns anything that can easily be moved, such as paintings, engravings, furniture, objects, archives, photos… The real estate heritage includes archaeological sites, buildings and landscaped sites. The buildings can belong to the municipality or be in the hands of private owners.

Building Heritage in Kraainem
Via this link you can consult an excel table which lists all the classified and protected buildings of Kraainem. The list is organized in alphabetical order of the streets of the municipality. If you want to know more about a listed building, indicate in the search field of any internet search engine "erfgoed + ID n °" (indicated in column G): you will have access to the descriptive notice (in Dutch) of the classified or protected building.
Categories of Heritage explained
The building (fixed) heritage can be subdivided into three categories, see here
Protected Heritage
Protected heritage (In Dutch: “beschermd erfgoed”; in French: “patrimoine protégé”) is recognized as having architectural, historical and cultural value and as being of general interest; it is closely monitored by the heritage protection services at the provincial level (in Leuven for Kraainem) (Erfgoed Vlaanderen)
Classified Heritage
Classified heritage (In Dutch: “vastgesteld erfgoed”; in French: “patrimoine classé”) is recognized as having architectural, historical and cultural value, but less prestigious and of mainly local interest; the care of this heritage is entrusted to the municipalities.
Others
In addition, some building heritage is simply documented (scientific inventory) without further consequence: this is the case for heritage that has disappeared (e.g. in Kraainem: the two mills, the paper factory ...) or which are so damaged or modified that a classification or protection is not justified (or no longer relevant). This scientific inventory also highlights the historic date and development of certain roads and pathways.
